In The Beginning

The Golden & District Community Foundation began as a steering committee in March, 2001, was incorporated in BC as a non-profit Society in June, 2001, and then became a registered charity in December, 2001.

The Foundation was created to facilitate the generosity of private and corporate donors, large and small, who wanted to contribute to the needs of citizens in Golden and area through the years. At the 2001 Opening Gala event over $40,000 was collected from local citizens. Major early donors were the Vancouver Foundation and the Columbia Basin Trust.

The Golden & District Community Foundation Board of Directors represents the broadest interests of the community. This is a board of diverse, skilled leaders who have energy, a feeling for our community and vision for its future. The Board and Advisory Committees are comprised of local volunteers.

The founding Board of Directors include: Kym Caldwell, Janet Crandall, Jeff Dolinsky, Brian Gulliford, Mag Magnusson, Lee Malleau, John Manuel, Tim Parker, Ken Piggot, Georgia Santucci, John Shapperd.

The Golden & District Community Foundation operates three types of accounts: The endowment funds, which are invested and only the income on investment is spent, an operating account to cover costs of running the Foundation, and a grants account which holds funds for approved grants.

The Foundation can provide funds in good times and in bad. Whereas most charities are required by law to disperse their funds in the year that donations are received, the Foundation invests gifts and distributes grants only from the earnings. The principal keeps working year after year so that funds are available to support community causes. Each year project applications from qualifying charitable organizations are accepted and grants awarded.

Membership in Community Foundations of Canada provides expertise and support for the Golden & District Community Foundation. In addition, the Foundation consults with the Vancouver Foundation, one of the largest community foundations in Canada, on an ongoing basis.
